After Action Report Format

One of the great benefits of working with a diverse client base is the knowledge we gain from best practices of some of those we serve.  Years ago, having worked with a number of organizations that serve our military, veterans and their families, I learned how much attention is paid to detail on major events.  We learned the importance placed on After Action Reports (AARs are used by all military services).  The use of an After Action Report Format works well with nonprofit organizations and the work they do.  A particular area is creating an After Action Report Format after an event so it can be improved upon in the future.

Two weeks ago one of our clients had an outdoor event on a Saturday which was well attended.  We noticed that a few key staff left before it ended. Having been to hundreds of these events, there is so much to learn at the end — who stays, what conversations did people have, what worked and what didn’t, and who was available to have that key conversation with the very last person to leave?  Creating an AAR process after major activities will serve nonprofit committees well and lead to continual improvement.

Next time you have a major event or even a “lunch and learn” with prospective donors, take a few minutes with internal leadership and document what you can do better and what you learned.

tie it to a goal, not to people or objects.”
