March Madness for fundraisers

Fundraising has its seasons like so many other things in life.  This is the time that “snowbirds” start to come home to the Northeast, Midwest and Northwest.  It also is a time that starts a reverse migration for those who live in the south who are now planning their summers in places like Maine, North Carolina, Montana, the “shore” and the mountains.

What does this mean for you as professional fundraisers who are trying to get to meet with your donors?  Time to step it up and plan meetings.  We have from now through the beginning of June or thereabouts to get in front of our potential donors.  As we approach May we begin the season of graduations, weddings, and getting away for the summer.  So if you have been waiting for someone to get back in your neighborhood, try to get to them in the next 12 – 14 weeks.  And for some of you the fiscal year is coming to a close and there is push to meet budget goals.  Then the cycle begins again.

It is time to have meaningful conversations with your potential donors and discover what is important to them.  Don’t be afraid to ask the question, “what are your giving priorities?”

Do you know who your “Sweet 16” are yet? You may be surprised what you learn.
